1980ers spotlight at NPC and CPPCC sessions
On the morning of March 2, the NPC Hunan delegation arrived at Beijing. Wen Huazhi, a 26-year old girl from rural Shaoshan, was most catching of all. Elected as an NPC deputy, she was a brave tourist guide.
“I’m the tourist guide. Help my tourists first!” This was a moving scene at national expressway 210 in Luochuan county of Shaanxi Province on August 28, 2005.
The busload of tourists with the 23 year-old as the guide of New Horizon Travel Agency of Xiangtan, Hunan Province on board was hit by a serious traffic accident. In awaiting rescue Wen Huazhi insisted that she was the last to be saved. As a result of delayed treatment, she was infected in her injuries and had to have her left leg amputated. The pretty young girl won great respects with her deed at a critical moment.
She is now a sophomore in tourist management at Xiangtan University. “I was too excited to sleep when I heard I was elected an NPC deputy,” the beaming girl told the correspondents. “I thought NPC deputies and CPPCC members were all prestigious and experienced. I didn’t imagine I could ever be a glorious one among them.” “This shows that our country is getting more democratic. People of all sectors can have a chance to participate in the deliberation and running of state affairs,” she added.
She said she had acquired the knowledge related to the duty of an NPC deputy and had carefully prepared a proposal to the NPC session to boost Shaoshan red tourism. “My hometown Shaoshan concentrates on tourism, which represents a voice of my constituency. Meanwhile, tourism is the career I know much about,” she explained.
Like Wen Huazhi, NPC deputy Zhang Beibei was also a 1980er. She was born in April 1982, a third grade dancer of Liangshan Yi ethnic autonomous prefecture in Sichuan Province.
A pillar of the Liangshan Song and Dance Troupe, she began to learn ethnic dance at five and entered the Troupe after graduation from the provincial art school. Hard training and drills made her the best and the brightest among her peers. She has earned a long list of awards at the provincial and national levels since she began joining contests at 17.
“I thought being an NPC deputy was simple. Only after I was elected as such that I realized it was no easy thing to deliver a good bill, not to say of being a good NPC deputy,” Zhang told the correspondents.
From the Sichuan delegation, there was another 1980er, called Mao Jinfang, a 28 year-old women’s committee chairperson of Jiziping Village, Anshun township, Shimian county,
Mao enjoys very good popularity in her village. When the village primary school ran short of teachers, she volunteered to serve as a substitute. In a villager’s family, the man was disabled and the wife was mentally ill, leaving their two sons without proper clothing. Mao bought them clothes and food.
After being elected as a NPC deputy, Mao Jinfang learnt the Law on NPC Deputies and the Constitution, and spent one whole week heeding villager opinions.
She would raise a bill on increased inputs in education in mountainous and rural areas at the NPC session this year.
