Mother River Operation (MRPO) is a public welfare event jointly initiated at the beginning of 1999 by ACYF, China Afforestation Committee, Environment and Resources Protection Committee of the National People’s Congress, Population, Resources and Environment Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture, the State General Bureau for Environmental Protection and the State Forestry Bureau. Aimed at the protection and improvement of the ecological environment, the Operation is designed to educate the youth, influence the public and contribute to the preservation off the Mother River, the cradles of human civilization. The Operation comprises four major parts. First, to nurture and promote ecological culture and teach the youth to remember the sources of the water they drink, to strengthen their awareness of the Mother River, and to establish the concept of pursuing “advancement of human and nature in harmony”. Second, organize activities to experience the ecological environment for guiding the youth to personally experience the environment of the Mother River, to make environmental protection efforts in their daily life and to form good habits of environmental protection during participation in the activities. Third, drive the growth of the ecological economy, construct projects for protection of the Mother River, and promote clean production and the concept of sustainable development through our the society. Fourth, improve the exchange and cooperation among young people from different cultures around the world in the field of environmental protection in order for learning from each other, strengthening friendship and jointly protection the Mother River.
